My Big Girl,
You are two years old today, my love. My mind struggles to remember the days you were so helpless and small. These days, you have to do everything yourself no matter how long it takes. You spend your days chattering to me and sharing your thoughts. You still find clothes a nuisance and can't figure out why we have to wear them. Of course, sunglasses are a must since you have always been sensitive to the sun shining in your eyes. It isn't unusual to find you parading through the garden completely naked with your sunglasses picking veggies along the way. It is a sight to be seen!
Your favorite activities include helping me do chores and cook or anything that involves copying exactly what I am doing, often making my job a little more difficult, but a little more fun at the same time. You also love taking walks before the heat of the afternoon. Of course, nothing can beat spending all morning and evening in the garden. You make yourself busy digging holes, picking produce (especially tomatoes and strawberries), watering plants, and finding bugs.
Little one, there isn't a single day that passes that I am not eternally grateful to be your mother. To have the chance to watch you grow into the beautiful person you are becoming. I wake up every morning knowing I am the luckiest mother in the world to call you my own!

23 Months
Dear K,
You are 23 months old today. Only one month before you, my baby, turn two! I am so proud of the little girl you are growing up to be. You really are turning into a little girl. The toddler in you is starting to fade and although I sometimes wish you wouldn't grow so fast, I love learning about the person you are becoming each and every day.
You recently learned to tell me your emotions, sad, happy, mad, and we are working on frustrated. This has made both our lives so much easier. When you have the words to tell me how you feel you don't need to act them out so much and we can work through them together.
Things You Like: You like manners. I know that sounds strange, but you expect people to use their manners around you. You are good at remembering to say please and thank you. You also say, "salude!" when someone sneezes and sorry if you accidentally bump into someone. You also like formal greetings and I often hear you making your stuffed animals ask, "Como estas?" and the response is always the same, "Muy bien, gracias" You also expect others to use those same manners with you, as you should. The other day while distracted I asked you to hand me something. You did and then standing at waist height your blue blue eyes looked at me with a little disappointment and you said, "mama, gracias?" Sometimes mamas need reminders too.
Things You dislike: The sun. Well, you actually like the sun, announcing each morning that the sun (solecito) is awake as if there was any doubt the sun would rise, you get excited when the sun dries your clothes, and when the sun shines through your prism in your window creating rainbows on the wall. What you despise is the sun in your eyes. You have little sunglasses that we have to carry with us wherever you go just in case the sun decides to shine too bright. You look like a rock star in those glasses so I am grateful for sunny days.
New Words: You have almost mastered complete sentences. Well, you do speak in complete sentences, but they often have errors and you drop a lot of the smaller words. You also add "the" often when it isn't needed such as, "Kaylee is on the dada" We all let our voices get a little higher at the end of a sentence when we ask questions, it is just part of speech, but baby girl, your little voice gets so high pitched when you ask a question it is hard not to laugh. Sometimes I act like I couldn't hear you just to make you ask the question again. Too stinkin cute!
Your Spanish is improving and you seem to be figuring out when to use Spanish and when to use English, You will often use the English version of a word with me and the Spanish version with your dada or when in Spanish class. There are still a lot of words you only know in Spanish such as colors, numbers, the alphabet, animals, etc but you are very aware that most words come in two version, English and Spanish.
What I Like About This Age: I am in LOVE with this age. I told your dada the other day I wanted to have another baby, but give birth to them when they are 20 months old. The past 3 months have been my favorite. You are so easy to please (for the most part), a great helper with chores and cooking (although it does take twice as long with my little helper), easy to entertain, extremely independent, and a great little talker. I am a little nervous for the "terrible twos" to approach, but I am sure we will figure it out as we go!
I do miss naps, but I am adjusting to your nap free lifestyle and my lack of breaks.

22 Months
Dear Cake-A-Lake,
I had no idea when you were growing in my belly I would give birth to smaller version of myself. You may look more like your daddy, but your personality is all mine. So often your Nana will look at me and say, "If you ever wonder what you were like as a kid...there you are!" Your obsessive love of snuggles, the way you successfully boss all your friends around, your over dramatic expressions, your willingness to stand up for yourself, your mothering ways with your little cousin, the way you yell when frustrated, the way a good hug fixes all your problems, yes, these are all the little things that you got from me! Love it or hate it you can totally blame it all on me!
Things You Like: You love being outside as much as humanly possible (you got that from me too). You love working in the garden, taking walks (especially now that we are seeing baby ducks along the river), watering the flowers, you just love being outside.
You also love your little cousin with all yoru heart. You love to baby him and cover him with kisses. You spend huge portions of your day talking about him or pretending to be him. I love that you have one another and hope you always stay close.
Things You Like: Naps, especially since i think you gave them up for good. I am less than pleased with this lack of nap situation, but little girl you are always growing u way too quickly and I guess I should have seen this coming too!
Words: Oh my goodness, I sure gave birth to a girl! You talk allllll day long! We went to breakfast the other day, just you and me kid and you talked the entire hour we were out. I mean talked nonstop! I love hearing what you have to say and the thoughts going through your mind.

21 Months
Dear Curly Haired K,
You are becoming so grown up and I love watching you transform right before my eyes. Our days are full of conversation (often the same topic repeated over and over), art, playing in the yard, seeing family, and lots and lots of snuggles!
I am learning a lot about myself through your language development. I need to stop saying the word, "shit". I also must lose things a lot because you love to open drawers and cabinets, look around with a puzzled expression and say, "Hmmmm? Hmmm? Huh? Huh?"
Things You Like: You love narrating life so we get an instant replay of everything we do all the time! For example after I returned from a run I got this little replay,
K, "Mama run, run, run!
Me:"Yes, mama went on her run."
K, "TayTee (Kaylee) home wee wee wee (she says wee wee to indicate she was crying).
Me, "Oh, was Kaylee crying while mama was gone?"
K, "Yesh, Mama back. No mas (no more in Spanish) wee wee.
Or at the hardware store with my dad. He dropped something while we were walking
K, "Uh oh. Papa drop! Mama drop? No, Papa drop. Taytee drop? No Papa drop. No Nana drop. Papa drop. Yes, Papa drop. Uh oh drop Papa! Uh oh Uh oh. Papa drop." (this went on for a very long time)
You also like to retell stories with a little extra drama. Who knew that started so young. After playing outside for a little the neighbors dog came out and poked his nose through the fence to see what you were doing. You said hi to him and carried on your business of digging in the dirt. Later when we went in you told dada,
K: "Dada!! Chucho (dog in Spanish) come! Taytee gasp!!!!!" you dropped your jaw and looked shocked throwing your hands over your gaping mouth. Somehow my memory is that you were rather indifferent to the dog.
Dislike: Your hair keeps getting longer and longer, but you can't tell unless it is wet because as it gets longer it gets curlier and curlier. Those crazy curls match your spunky personality, however, they have a tendency to curl into each other making tangles. And if there is one thing you hate it is getting your hair washed and you really don't like it brushed (with my fingers- I learned you don't use a regular brush on curls the hard way). If it were up to you your hair would be rockin dread locks. Mommy's hair is as straight as can be so I am still trying to figure out how to care for those little curls.
Words: You know *almost* the whole alphabet in Spanish (except you still think w is m) You can't recite the song correctly although you try, but you have letter recognition. It makes shopping a little slower since you have to tell me every single time you see a letter you recognize.
You keep saying new words everyday. Yesterday you said, "itchy" (while scratching your cheek) which was cool since I didn't know you even knew what that word meant. You also recently learned, "Mama get it" which, although cute, is not my favorite sentence since you are usually bossing me around with it!

20 Months
Dear K,
Even though you are still closer to 1 1/2 than 2, saying you are 20 months sounds so much closer to 2. You are currently mommy's little helper.
Thing You Like: You love to help take responsibility around the house (I am sure I will miss this when you are a teenager!) and do lots of chores with me. You are great at throwing things in the garbage (except the time you threw away a few unused Cayston vials), you love putting your laundry in your basket, washing windows, putting shoes away, unloading the dishwasher (you do silverware), cooking (pouring ingredients and stirring), and following directions. Sometimes I tell you to do things just to watch you follow directions because honestly it is amazing how well you understand everything.
Things You Dislike: You still get frustrated easily. We are working getting you to live a more zen life, but I think that may take some time ;)
What I Like About This Age: I feel like you and I are in such a groove, little girl. We just get each other right now and most of our days are peaceful and happy. Sure, there are those moments, but for this little month in time you are super easy to please, we are having a ton of fun and enjoying each day. I do know by now, that once things get too easy you throw something new my way to mix it up. So I will be waiting to see what this next month brings!
New Words: We still haven't gotten to cinco yet and still stuck saying, "caca"

Oh, but little Kay for the first time since starting classes 9 months ago you answer questions when the teacher asks, you tell the teacher which letter or color you want (always adding "peeees" aka please at the end of your request) and you sing right along with the songs. This class is teaching you language, but I think you are starting to realize that even smart curly haired little girls have a place in this man's world.
What I Like About This Age: I feel like you and I are in such a groove, little girl. We just get each other right now and most of our days are peaceful and happy. 19 months
Dear Princess,
This month has been all about colors for you! You are absolutely obsessed with your colors! You want to know what color everything is! This tree. That book. The dog. The wall. You know all your colors in Spanish except yellow which you will only say in English. If we try to tell you in Spanish you look at us like we grew two heads and correct us in English. You can identify yellow from miles away and you have almost perfected "nana" (naranja) "verve" (verde) and "rojo". The other colors get a little confusing and you often need a little help identifying them, but you are getting much better. Shopping is fun with you because you love to identify the color of the clothes as you walk by. You get pretty frustrated with me when you ask me what color something is (in your own made up babble language) and I don't know what you are asking. I usual figure it our once you start raising your voice. I now default to telling you colors if I am ever in doubt of what you want.
Thing You Like: You are obsessed with books. I remember babysitting kids as a teenager when they were in this stage and I thought it was cute, reading 8 million books in a row. As a mom, not so much. I mean, I LOVE reading to you and I LOVE that you love books. But reading the same books over and over and over every single day gets a little...dull. But the cool thing about reading is you are getting interested in letters and although you think you know all your letters you really only know the letter "o". You love to look for letter O when I read to you and you point them out on each page. Pretty cool!
You are also obsessed with counting to four in Spanish. Although your cuatro comes out as "caca" which always makes me laugh and is a little embarrassing in public! Your favorite thing to count are your toes (apparently you only have 4 toes, but we are working on number 5!)
Things You Dislike: You get so very frustrated when we don't know what you are saying. I understand because when I was learning Spanish I would often say things perfectly, in my mind, and nobody would understand. I found it one of the most frustrating things in the world so I totally get your tantrums on that one!
What I Like About This Age: You are so so very independent. You play by yourself so much that sometimes I feel left out! You have the best imagination and you are such a jokester, you are constantly making us laugh!

18 Months
Dear KK,
You are one and a half today! I can't believe how much my life is continuously changing with you! My favorite part about this age is that a few days after turning 17 months you started saying, "I love you!" I never thought my heart could grow bigger for you, but it did!
You also potty trained a few days after turning 17 months as well, but I still don't know how to navigate out of the house adventure without diapers and you are not night time potty trained so you still get to wear diapers.
Things You Like: Oh, little one you love life so much, but more than anything you love your Papa and baby cousin who you call Roo. I think Sunday is your favorite day of the week because you get to see your two favorite people! You also love playing pretend, doing anything art related, and helping me bake.
Things You Dislike: You are able to talk a lot, but you also know words that we aren't sure of the meaning. You get really frustrated trying to tell me things that i can't understand. You will come up to me and say something like, "Mama, laloo." While I am racking my brain wondering what the heck that means you keep repeating it over and over, louder and louder. It can get frustrating for both of us!
What I Like About This Age: Our days are full of coversations. Yes, they are simple, but it is so fun to hear what is on your mind. Some of our conversations are as follows.
K: Mama, agua!
M: Yes, this is mama's aqua.
K: KK agua!
M: You're right that is Kaylee's aqua.
K: Dada lights on
M: Yes, dada put the Christmas lights up and turned them on.
K: Yesh, dada lights on!
K: (chanting) KK, baby Rooooo, KK, baby ROOO
New Words: I can't keep track anymore as you seriously must know 30 or more.

17 Months
K-Cakes,
You are 17 whole months today and each month gets more lovely than the next EXCEPT this month. There were a few days I flopped on the couch and said, exasperated, to your father, "I am not having fun as a mommy at the moment." Don't get me wrong because you are my light, my heart, my soul, my life. But this past month was very challenging. The melt downs, the I do it myself when you clearly couldn't attitude. the tantrum, sigh!! Well, little one I really can't complain because I had it so much easier than you did, you got 4 molars all within the same two days and then with almost no break at all you got the top eye teeth. 6 teeth in one month just isn't fair, little bug. So you had every right to pout and whine and be grumpy!
Things You Like: Doing it yourself even when you can't. You want to be independent and grown up so badly. but you still have a ways to go. You want to dress yourself (when you are not on a clothes strike), you want to change your own diaper, you want to buckle your own car seat, wash your own hair, but you really don;t have the capability of doing any of these tings. It makes for slow moving days, but it is pretty cute watching you try to do everything yourself unless we have a deadline. When we have to be somewhere it is really frustrating.
Things You Dislike: You don't like certain strangers coming up to you and being too friendly. You will often decide to become "friends" with strangers (90% of the time it is men), but you want to be the one to choose who talks to you. You aren't necessarily shy because if you "like" someone you are super outgoing, but if the wrong stranger comes to talk you don't appreciate it.
What I Like About This Age: The other day your found a piece of paper on the ground in the living room. You ran up to me to show me what you found. I looked at it and said, "basura" (garbage in Spanish) and went about my business. I hardly noticed you run out of the room, but I absolutely heard the kitchen cabinet open. I decided to spy on you to see what you were up to. You were opening the cabinet where our garbage is and you you were throwing the basura in the basura! I had no idea you even knew what basura meant. You understand so much and you are a great helper. I love asking you to do or get things for me just because I am amazed and how much you understand.
"Get your gub gubs (shoes)!" You run and get them.
"Can you get my phone?" She does
"Put your clothes in the hamper" She does.
There are little mis-communications though. The other day you were playing with my pot while I prepared the veggies for soup. When I asked for you to bring my pot back you ran from the room went into my bedroom and came back with a pair of my underwear from my dresser. Not so helpful when making soup.
New Words: You know all the animal sounds in Spanish (which are different than English. Who knew a rooster says, "kikiriki!" and not cockadoodledoo) She also says all the names of my immediate family. She is repeating everything now. She doesn't necessarily know what it means, but she has a great ear for repeating words in both English and Spanish. Although, we have noticed she sticks her tongue out a lot more when attempting Spanish words.
You are 17 whole months today and each month gets more lovely than the next EXCEPT this month. There were a few days I flopped on the couch and said, exasperated, to your father, "I am not having fun as a mommy at the moment." Don't get me wrong because you are my light, my heart, my soul, my life. But this past month was very challenging. The melt downs, the I do it myself when you clearly couldn't attitude. the tantrum, sigh!! Well, little one I really can't complain because I had it so much easier than you did, you got 4 molars all within the same two days and then with almost no break at all you got the top eye teeth. 6 teeth in one month just isn't fair, little bug. So you had every right to pout and whine and be grumpy!
Things You Like: Doing it yourself even when you can't. You want to be independent and grown up so badly. but you still have a ways to go. You want to dress yourself (when you are not on a clothes strike), you want to change your own diaper, you want to buckle your own car seat, wash your own hair, but you really don;t have the capability of doing any of these tings. It makes for slow moving days, but it is pretty cute watching you try to do everything yourself unless we have a deadline. When we have to be somewhere it is really frustrating.
Things You Dislike: You don't like certain strangers coming up to you and being too friendly. You will often decide to become "friends" with strangers (90% of the time it is men), but you want to be the one to choose who talks to you. You aren't necessarily shy because if you "like" someone you are super outgoing, but if the wrong stranger comes to talk you don't appreciate it.

16 Months
**Had this in my saved drafts, but never posted. So lets just pretend this was posted in October**
Oh Kaylee,
You are 16 months old today and you love to talk about yourself in third person. The nice thing about this (besides how cute it is) is that you have held off on learning the word, "Mine!" Instead when you want something you say, "KyKy." and somehow that seems significantly less rude. My favorites are when I am eating something and you point to your tiny mouth and say "KyKy", how can I not share! You also love saying, "bye bye" to things like, "bye bye me me" (me me is light night night) when you wake up. Or when you finish eating you say, "bye bye num". You also use this to say, "get away from me" like when I am trying to change your diaper or put you in clothes.
Things You Like: You love love love your baby doll. You breastfeed her, you give her kisses, you shhh shhh her when she is sad. You bring her on walks and in the car. It is fun to see how loving and sweet you are to your baby.
Things You Dislike: Now that the days are getting shorter you really despise when we are driving and the sun gets in your eyes. The first time it happened I thought you were dying in the back seat. Now I know that my little princess (who from day one acted like death was upon her when the sun shone into your delicate blue eyes) is simply shrieking and curing st the sun. It took you so long to learn to tolerate your car seat and now I get to relive the joys of hearing your screams in the back seat!
What I Like About This Age: Your attention span is so much longer. I can actually get things done around the house while you play with your books, puzzles, feet, whatever. Getting chores done is less of a chore because you are pretty content just playing by yourself. Most of the challenges about babyhood are a distant memory although knew ones naturally have cropped up. I am enjoying toddler hood more and more each day, tantrums and all.

15 Months
Things You Like: You love imaginary play! It is so fun to watch you play pretend because it makes you seem like such a little kid. You have been pretending to talk on the phone and shave for a few months, but it seems that imaginary play has really taken off this month. You pretend to feed you doll, you like to nurse toys on both my chest and yours, you pretend to wash your hair when you get a bath, everything is a screwdriver and anytime you see a screw whether at home or at the store you pretend to use a screwdriver to "take it out. You loved to pretend to be just like the abandoned kitty we found (and gave to a good home) by crawling on all fours barking (yeah, apparently cats bark), pretending to eat with just your mouth, etc.
Things You Dislike: Well, you have gotten to the tantrum stage that you can get overly furious when things don't go your way. I have already experienced the, "Oh my god, I am THAT mom in the store" feeling when you decided a tantrum was the best choice in letting my know you were mad. From what I hear this is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.
What I Like About This Age: You are growing so independent of me, but still rely on my heavily for support. You often want to play by yourself in the other room. You have to make a huge production about leaving. You say bye multiple times, blow kisses and wave. You then frolic into the other room to play for a few moments and come running back to make sure I am still around. It is pretty cute to see your independence emerge, but I am secretly glad you still want to make sure I am somewhat near you.
Things You Dislike: Well, you have gotten to the tantrum stage that you can get overly furious when things don't go your way. I have already experienced the, "Oh my god, I am THAT mom in the store" feeling when you decided a tantrum was the best choice in letting my know you were mad. New Words: You talk all the time and you are getting better at using words appropriately. For example, you use "off" to mean "get off" (often to Gub Gub), "turn off" (the light), and "take off" (her shoes!). You also use, "bye" to mean that you/someone else is leaving, but you also (inappropriately) use to mean you are done with something. When you are done eating you say, "bye ana" (bye manzana). If you don;t know the name of what you are saying bye to (like a food/toy you aren't sure what it is called) you simple say, "bye daa dan da". It is kinda your catch all word.
You also speak more Spanish than English which makes me so excited. Your latest Spanish word (I kid you not) is "a guardar" (to pick up). We sing the clean up song in spanish (A guardar) whenever we pick up toys and K sings right along with us. Seriously, cool!

13 Months
Dear BuggyBoo,
You are 13 months today! My Nana (your great-Nana!) said from 1-2 years is her absolute favorite age and now I know why! You make Papi and I laugh all the time! You are getting to know your world and trying to find your place in it which is fascinating to watch. You know what you like and dislike and make it known- sometimes to our pleasure and sometimes to our horror! You ask for things now using the limited vocabulary you have and you tiny pointer finger. For example, your Papi plays a game where he takes of his shirt and whips it to make wind in your direction and then throws it over your head. You LOVE it. Whenever you see his undershirt you pull at it saying, "mas, mas, mas"
Not only do you know what you like and dislike, but you also stand up for yourself which I love to see. You are a strong little girl and I know will grow up to be a strong woman! Once in Spanish class a little boy wanted to take your toy. You buried it in your arms and ran away saying, "no no no!" Everyone in the class was laughing because it was so cute.
Things You Like: You love to reenact everything Mommy and Papi do. You try to put on my shoes, you try to put on your own shoes, you try to put on my sunglasses, and everything is a cell phone. Your cell phone conversations go something like this: "hi, dada!" "lalala(which sounds almost like a yodel)"....(fake laughing and bending over because you are "laughing" so hard)..."lalalala" (more fake laughing)....bye!
Things You Dislike: Clothes and especially diapers. You are my little nudist and since it has been so hot you stomp around the garden in your birthday suit. It is hard not to smile seeing you marching around naked!
What I Like About This Age: I love that you understand humor now. Sometimes you will pretend you are going to bite our toes and then pull away at the last minute laughing. You love to put things on your head because you know it is silly. You also totally get when we are trying to be silly too. It makes for such fun interactions.
I also love that you are more socially aware. Papi and I were eating at a restaurant the other day and there was a group of elder women at the table next to us. You were intrigued (and not yet socially aware that eavesdropping is rude) and watched them the whole time laughing when they laughed, looking serious when they were serious, and chattering away with your babble when the conversation got lively.
